Each year in September BWVA co-sponsors a major outreach event to raise awareness of safe, respectful road sharing practices. In 2010 over 195 schools, companies, colleges, local government organizations, and non-profits joined in to support this program. Through the combined energies of all the partners we reached thousands across the state with safety tips, laws, and general information about sharing the road.
In 2011 we will conclude a project with the Department of Motor Vehicles to develop a series of 4 short educational videos on biking and walking. Two videos on biking, one in English, one Spanish, will be produced and two videos for pedestrians, one in English, one Spanish, will be produced. Videos, partially funded by a federal safety grant, will be available for public distribution through channels such as You Tube. We hope to secure additional financial support to to make the videos available on DVD to schools and other organizations.
Planning is underway for the new BVWVA Community Resource Tool-kit, a place for individuals, community leaders, and organizations to turn for information and guidance. Our goal is to provide support for those that want to:
Look for our toolkit to be available in mid 2011.
In 2010 we successfully supported safer streets in the Richmond Virginia metropolitan area through a media campaign on city buses. “Look for Me” panels appeared on buses at eye level for bus riders and surrounding traffic. Our project will continue and expand in 2011 with two additional localities being added. Look for our bus ads in major Virginia cities starting in Spring 2011.
Become a supporter. Contributions make our educational and awareness programs possible. Even the tiniest donation can help make Virginia a better place to bike and walk. Learn more on our Contributions Page.
