Four organizations were awarded the first offering of the Sunrise Project Community Grants on June 28, 2011. The grants aimed at improving biking and walking were offered to locales in the New River Valley that worked with the 2011 BikeWalk Virginia annual cycling event, The Bike Virginia Tour. The grant award ceremony took place on the 4th day of the 5 day bike tour and was attended by over 500 individuals traveling with the tour as well as a gathering of community representatives. Each of the four organizations received $500 to support projects or initiatives.

The four recipients were:

  • Radford City Tourism- for purchase of a bike rack and installation at the Radford Visitor’s Bureau
  • Pulaski County Chamber-  for purchase of a bike rack and installation at the Pulaski County Visitor’s Center
  • Pulaski County Parks and Recreation- for purchase of bicycles for a bike rental program at Randolph Program
  • NRV Grows/Christiansburg Farmer’s Market- for purchase of a bike racks

Proceeds from the annual Bike Virginia Tour support the mini-grant program. Grant applications will be extended to communities that host the tour in coming years. Each year the tour moves to a new location around the state.
