BikeWalk Virginia is committed to building communities of cyclists and walkers across the state. We want a healthier, cleaner, more enjoyable state; a place where we can safely move without dependence on cars.

We work with public and private organizations, state agencies, municipalities and civic groups to promote change in the way we think, travel, and plan our communities.

  • We are advocates, supporting local and national initiatives to provide safe walking/riding routes for children such as Safe Routes to School and Virginia Cycling and Pedestrian Awareness Week, National Walk to School Day each October, Bike-to-Work Day, Bike Month.
  • We host annual events, such as Bike Virginia, recognized as one of the Top Ten Rides in America by Bicycling Magazine and Tour de Chesapeake in Mathews County.
  • We promote bicycle safety through Share the Road education, helping communities plan events such as bike rodeos, working with agenies to offer programs including Bike Smart Virginia certification workshops and training to teachers, health coordinators and other organizations.
  • We host ongoing web-based education on topics related to bicycle and pedestrian safety, access, and encouragement.
  • We work with coalitions to plan and build more bike-pedestrian friendly projects and amenities, such as trails, bikepaths and other accommodations, including the Virginia Outdoor Plan.
  • We are your voice in Richmond, our Capitol, to advance non-motorized transportation as part of an overall solution for the pressing issues of our time, including comprehensive planning, growth, community wellbeing, healthy lifestyles, transportation congestion, and climate change.

Since 2000, BikeWalk Virginia has been working to educate Virginians about the benefits of biking and walking and other forms of non-motorized transportation. In Spring 2004, the Virginia Trails Association joined us, broadening our mission to include promoting trails and assisting on and off road bicycle riders, walkers and hikers.

By becoming a member you increase our impact by helping us match grant funding, you strengthen our voice, and show community leaders that we (those who want to walk and bike) are the norm, not the exception.
