A 501(C)(3) non-profit organization since 2000, Bike Virginia (formerly BikeWalk Virginia) works through programs, projects, and activities to inspire more human powered recreation and transportation on bike.
You can burn calories instead of fossil fuels and get more engaged in your community’s sights and sounds as you go. Your wallet will thank you too, biking around for errands and for your commute can save both wear and tear on your car and fuel expenses. You might even get a lower mileage discount on your insurance or decide you don’t need a car at all! And don’t forget, it makes you feel like a kid again.
We work to inspire people to ride and to create communities that are bicycle friendly. We provide resources and information to thousands of people a year through our home website and our resources website. We give guidance to those seeking help. We put smiles on over 2,000 peoples faces a year with our annual Bike Virginia Tour.
We work with communities to facilitate change. We provide tools and examples of successful projects and programs. We sponsor grants to help make bicycling initiatives happen. We generate over $2.8 Million per year in economic stimulation with our Bike Virginia Tour
We work on legislative issues to make Virginia a safer, more enjoyable place to ride. We stimulate tourism on the state level though promoting bicycle tourism. Our news and blog stories raise awareness of initiatives and help lead people to bicycling destinations across the state.
Building and empowering communities of bicyclists.
Kimberly, with BWVA since 2008 is passionate about safe places for biking. Her background in health education was influential in her desire to work in bike and pedestrian advocacy where she can have a lasting impact on active living. Kim oversees organizational activities in addition to being a subject matter expert on educational program planning. In recent year’s Kim has served on multiple state-wide bike committees, local commissions, and has served as Vice President and President of Richmond MORE. Kim is an avid outdoor enthusiast and enjoys mountain biking, running errands by bike, kite-boarding, surfing, snowboarding, and adventure racing.
Shane joined BWVA in 2009. He is our lead staff on bike event planning and our public outreach campaigns. Shane comes to BWVA from a Landscape Architecture background which makes him our resident expert on trail design and community planning for bike infrastructure. Shane is also a founding member of the Richmond Cycling Federation and has served as a National Park Service Liason to ASLA: Rivers and Trails and has recently worked on the Richmond Mayor’s Commission on Cycling and Walking. Shane is passionate about road biking, mountain biking, adventure travel and the great outdoors.
Our go to gal, Christine works with businesses and individuals to see projects through to completion. Her background is in finance and she manages logistical planning for our events and oversees our organization’s business contracts and grants reporting. Christine is our front line contact for our event registrations. She works closely with our vendors to make sure the registration processes is running smoothly. Christine believe in our work because she’s making Virginia a better place for families to live, work, and play.
Wayne has worked with BWVA since early 2010. He works on grant projects and event activities, making sure our technology meets today’s demands. Wayne has 30 years experience in IT consulting and before joining our staff had worked tirelessly in the Richmond, Virginia region to personally support and build trails for running and mountain biking. He was a founding member of Central Virginia’s only Mountain Bike organization, Richmond-MORE. Wayne is passionate about the cycling, both on road and off, and is an advocate for lifelong physical fitness.
Sam stopped by our offices one sunny day in 2011 and we haven’t been able to get rid of him since. He claims to have extensive experience in IT Infrastructure and Project Management, so we put him to work straight away on our websites, social media, and managing multiple tasks and grant work. It doesn’t hurt that he was once a college professor of engineering, as education is the primary role which he fulfills, building relationships with the community and government alike. We’re still working on his sense of humor, but can overlook that as long as he brings his can-do, friendly attitude. Sam is an avid mountain biker, passionate foodie, amateur musician, consumer electronics geek, entertainment junkie and all-around great guy. Who spends way too much time volunteering for local organizations rather than pursue his deserved 15 minutes of fame.
